Cardio Tennis continues to grow globally. The LTA (Lawn Tennis Association) sponsored a 2-day Cardio Tennis workshop in London at the their new National Tennis Center. Forty LTA coaches were hand picked to attend the workhop. It turned out to be an amazing group of coaches who have the potential to make a huge impact with Cardio Tennis in the UK.

The Tracy Austin Cardio Tennis Tour visits  Kansas and Missouri. Tracy spent three days promoting Cardio Tennis with consumer events at Midtown Tennis Club, the Plaza Tennis Center and the Cooper Tennis Center as well as two World Team Tennis events where she particpated in the stadium court Cardio Tennis demo.

Demos at pro events
Cardio Tennis continues to be a big presence at professional tournaments such as the Cambells Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, Countrywide classic in Los Angeles, RCA championships in Indianapolis, Western and Southern Financial Group Masters in Cincinatti, the East West Bank Classic in Los Angeles and WTT in Philadelphia and Delaware. A big thanks to those Cardio Tennis coaches who ran those stadium court demos such as Chris Ojakian, Larry Hampton, Elizabeth Tassone and Scott Moreland.

CARDIO CURRICULUM: Drill based vs Play based
How much time should be spent in your Cardio segment on drills and how much on games/play based exercises? This question is asked frequently and I encourage all of you to spend as much time as possible playing games. Why, because games are FUN and that is what Cardio Tennis is all about! Today I will discuss the pros and cons of both drill and play based and in the next few issues I will talk about how to be successful playing games with mixed abilities and how to avoid 2 players dominating the point.

Drills are great for Cardio Tennis because:
  • Drills work well with players of mixed ability level
  • The pro has more control as to what's happening on the court
  • May be preferred by those who do not want to compete (fitness classes and machines have no competition)
However, the pro must be a great feeder so everyone is being challenged according to their fitness and ability level and the pro needs a great variety of drills to keep players engaged.

Play based exercises are great for Cardio Tennis because:
  • THEY ARE FUN!!
  • It gets people "playing" tennis more quickly
  • "Live ball" action preferred by existing players
  • Creates competitive points and rallies with good energy
  • Prepares player for real situations
However, it is critical to keep all players involved and it tends to work better with players of similar ability level.

As a general rule I recommend spending about 10-15 minutes on drills and then 15-20 minutes on games. I like the drill segment because this will allow my players to practice all their shots before being put into a "game" situation.

Ultimately it depends on your customer and your style. Ask your customers after class which drills they liked and which they didn't. Remember we have a great product and one of the things which sets it apart from other fitness programs is VARIETY, there are thousands of drills out there which can be used for Cardio Tennis. It is up to you as the coach to be CREATIVE AND MAKE IT FUN.

NEW EXERCISE GUIDELINES FROM THE ACSM
More than 10 years after they were first published the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and the American Heart Association (AHA) have updated their recommendations regarding physical activity for adults. They are now recommending a minimum of 150 mins/week at moderate or 60 mins/week high intensity exercise. Another reason to do Cardio Tennis as Cardio Tennis twice per week would amply fulfill that requirement!
